A gate post is not a line post in a different location. It absorbs dynamic loads, torque, horizontal thrust, and leverage from an opening and closing mass that moves thousands of times over a structure's life. A line post is static. A gate post is dynamic. Every time a gate swings, the post absorbs a concentrated lateral force at the hinge point — typically 3 to 5 feet above grade. Post Size: 6x6 Is the Gate Post Standard
Gate posts should be one size larger than adjacent line posts. If line posts are 4x4, gate posts should be 6x6. Reasons: greater bending moment resistance, more surface for hardware attachment, better fastener spacing, and more material to distribute stress. Setting: Dead-Plumb in Both Planes
Use a 4-foot level on two perpendicular faces before concrete hardens. Both faces must be plumb. Then measure diagonally from top corner to bottom corner in both directions — these must match within 1/4 inch. A post that is plumb front-to-back but leaning diagonally will produce a sagging gate within one year.
Bracing: 72 Hours Minimum
Line posts: 24 to 48 hours before tensioning. Gate posts: 72 hours minimum before attaching any hardware. Use diagonal X-braces or rigid temporary framing. Do not apply any lateral force to the post during the curing window.
