High-tensile wire rope (3/8 inch) can span 10 to 12 feet because tension does the work. Smooth wire (non-barbed) spans less than barbed or twisted because it has lower tensile strength. Electric fence wire spans less. Most agricultural fences use 8-foot spacing as a compromise between post cost and wire strength.

Gate Posts: Why They Are Different

Gate Post Construction

Concrete embedment: gate posts must be set deeper than line posts. Standard is 3 feet deep (below frost line in most northern regions). Use a minimum 18 by 18 inch footing or equivalent post-hole diameter. Pour concrete around the post; do not rely on soil alone.

Corner and End Posts: Terminal Post Requirements

Corner posts and end posts are terminal posts. They do not have a neighboring post on one or both sides to share lateral load. They must absorb the full moment of a fence section acting as a lever arm.

Larger Posts Required

Spec a 6x6 for every corner and end post. Do not use 4x4 unless the fence is under 3 feet tall and in a very calm area. A 6x6 has 2.25 times the cross-sectional area of a 4x4, which significantly increases moment resistance.

Deeper Embedment
