Step 2: Calculate Structural Minimum

The structural minimum for post depth is one-third of the above-ground post height. A 6-foot fence post needs a minimum 2-foot structural depth. A 9-foot post needs 3 feet.

Step 3: Take the Greater of the Two

States With High Variation: What to Watch For

Several states have dramatic internal variation in frost depth that makes a single state-level number unreliable. If you are in one of these states, verify locally before finalizing your depth.

California

The coastal counties from San Diego to San Francisco experience essentially zero frost concern. The Sierra Nevada, Cascade foothills, and eastern high desert areas can see 18 to 36 inches of frost penetration. Elevation is the controlling variable, not latitude.

Colorado

Front Range metro areas (Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs) follow the 36-inch standard consistently. Mountain communities like Breckenridge, Telluride, and Crested Butte regularly see 48 to 60 inches and some high-altitude jurisdictions go deeper. Never assume Front Range standards apply at elevation.

Montana and Wyoming

Eastern plains areas are significantly shallower than mountain regions in the same state. Billings, MT operates at approximately 36 inches; Missoula and western mountain valleys approach 48 to 54 inches.

Texas

The frost gradient across Texas is dramatic. Houston has no meaningful frost concern. Dallas gets occasional freezes that penetrate 6 inches. The Texas panhandle (Amarillo) sees consistent 12-inch frost depth and occasional deeper penetration during severe winters like the 2021 February storm.

Alaska

A Note on Climate Variability

Building to the code minimum means building to survive a typical winter, not necessarily an extreme one. Structural posts for high-value installations (deck footings, carport posts, pergola anchors) are worth setting 6 to 12 inches deeper than the code minimum as a hedge against once-in-a-decade weather events.

For fence posts and light-duty applications, code minimum is the accepted professional standard.
